Flooring material guide

Start with the floor assembly, then compare Canadian material candidates

Flooring choices depend on more than finish colour. Identify the substrate, moisture exposure, room use, transition heights and installation method before comparing products.

Prepare the material requirements first

FloorOttawa keeps flooring-specific decisions here instead of duplicating a supplier catalogue. Record substrate, moisture conditions, assembly thickness, installation method and the manufacturing evidence you need before comparing products.

Candidate status is not a manufacturing claim. Verify the exact brand, model or SKU and its current made-in-Canada evidence before purchase.

Subfloor first

For wood subfloors, check fastening, flatness, damaged panels and movement before choosing a finish. For concrete, confirm moisture conditions and the flooring manufacturer's vapour-control requirements. A product that is suitable upstairs may be a poor basement choice even when the appearance is identical.

Compare the complete thickness

Include flooring, pad or underlayment, adhesive and any membrane when comparing finished height. Door clearances, stair transitions, dishwasher removal, cabinet toe-kicks and adjoining tile can all be affected by a few millimetres of assembly thickness.

Ottawa moisture and seasonal movement

Wood and wood-based products respond to seasonal humidity. Check acclimation instructions, permitted indoor humidity, below-grade restrictions and radiant-heat limits for the exact product. Waterproof marketing does not automatically mean a floor is approved for every wet-area or slab condition.

What to verify

  • exact product and manufacturer
  • Canadian-made evidence for that SKU
  • substrate and moisture compatibility
  • installation method and underlayment
  • warranty limits and transition requirements
